Knutsford has become a well sought after residential area, with great shopping facilities and a bar and restaurant culture that attracts many young people each weekend. In 2005 Knutsford was named as the most expensive town to buy a house in Northern England. The town is recorded in the Domesday Book as Cunetsford, a name thought to refer to the place where King Canute king of England (1016 - 1035), forded the Lily Stream in 1016.
Probably its most notable resident was the authoress and biographer Elizabeth Gaskell (1810 – 65), who is best known for her literary biography The Life of Charlotte Bronte. Another of her most well loved novels 'Cranford', which was dramatized in a recent BBC mini-series, is set in 19th century Knutsford. The house where she grew up stands in what is now Gaskell Avenue. In 1292, the town was given the prestigious title of the 'Capital of Cheshire', after it was given its first charter. There are many nearby attractions including Tatton Park, Peover Hall and, two miles west of Knutsford, Tabley House and lots of great walks and bike rides in the area. Many public figures, including David and Victoria Beckham and Neil and Christine Hamilton, have lived in the town and its surrounding villages.
